Supply Chain Jobs Information

A supply chain is a network of business organizations working collectively to supply goods and services to consumers. A supply chain is composed of independent suppliers, processing plants, manufacturers, warehouses, cold storage facilities, retailers and distributors. In effect, a supply chain is like a single organization working together towards a single purpose, to supply goods and services.

A supply chain begins with a supplier of raw materials such as grains, vegetables, fruits, raw meat and fish. It can also be a supplier of raw metals, minerals and wood. These raw materials are transported to a manufacturing plant where they are washed, cleaned, dried or processed into finished products such as canned or bottled food, sheet and rod metals, lumber and their by-products. From the manufacturing plants, the finished products are moved to storage facilities or warehouses awaiting their delivery to distributors all across the country. These distributors are responsible for distribution and sales to retailers, consumers and customers. All of these independent companies and businesses compose the supply chain, each playing an important role in the process. The absence of one paralyses the operation of the supply chain.

A supply chain is often associated with agricultural, fishing and mining products and other consumer goods. Nowadays, the supply chain has been applied in the services sector such as professional and skilled services. These professionals and workers are members of unions or professional partnerships. They are virtually a web of professionals, consultants and skilled workers with a common interest, to obtain a client base. Software suppliers and technicians also have their own supply chain. Their goal is to deliver maintenance services, computer software and hardware and other computer accessories to clients.

An outsourcing business is basically a part of a network of independent companies. These small outsourcing companies supply the labor, skills and expertise to another company. This company is responsible for the regulation, supervision, quality control and distribution of these services to the customers. These customers are major corporations and companies who are also engaged in the sale and distribution of products and services.

A supply chain is a strategy to help small businesses and companies become competitive. Large corporations have their own logistical systems and have a customer base established through years of operation. Without a supply chain, a small farmer or supplier of raw materials will stand no chance at participating in the market. At most, he can sell his products and services only to local consumers and customers.
