The term business plan encompasses all areas of planning within a business organization or incidentally in any other organization, whether for profit or not. A plan refers to a step by step process or procedure to achieve a desired goal. Strategy on the other hand, refers to a specific action or set of actions for carrying out these plans. A business plan or simply “planning” therefore, consists of a collection of strategies working independently towards a common end. It could be a short term project involving only a small team in the business organization to address a small problem or a long term plan that could involve the whole organization and many years of collective effort.

Planning in the business setting is motivated by a specific need or problem, the need to gain more market share or to eliminate the competition. In order to achieve this, a business plan is created where the whole organization can be involved. A group of experts or a management service team can be involved, as well. In a way, customers are also involved in planning. Suggestion boxes have always been used as a device to improve services by obtaining the opinions and sentiments of the customers. Technically, everyone who is involved in the planning process can be called strategists.

A good business plan starts with having a well defined mission. What is it that we want to achieve? Do we need to boost our sales? Do we need to develop a better product or improve our services? These are questions that have to be addressed by this mission. Having identified that mission, a mission statement is formulated. This mission statement will be the measure of the development or progress of the business plan. A business plan should revolve around this mission statement. A process of brainstorming follows, where each member of the planning team contributes his ideas, suggestions and knowledge.

Once the plan is drafted and finalized, the planning team breaks down the plan into fragments. These fragments are the strategies. Strategies are specific and definite actions or methods of carrying out a particular objective. In order to achieve a part of the plan, these strategies are delegated to a specific member or a team in the business organization. Through the collective effort of these teams, the business plan is set into motion and gradually develops towards achieving the objectives in the mission statement.
