Skilled Labor And Trades Jobs In New York

Skilled Labor And Trades Jobs Information

Skilled labor trades are those associated with the construction industry. Carpenters, plumbers, welders, insulators, masons, air conditioning technicians and electricians are some of the skilled workers required in this field. Skilled labor trades are jobs that require special training and education. Most skilled workers accumulate skills through years of experience working in a specialized field. This is the only way of moving from entry level positions to mid level or supervisory/ foreman positions in this industry. Some skilled labor trades require the use of everyday tools only, as in the case of a carpenter or electrician. Some have to be trained to operate heavy equipment such as bulldozers, special tools, instruments and other heavy equipment.

The construction industry consists in building commercial and residential buildings. Other infrastructure projects such as sewers, dams, roads and bridges are included here as well. The demand for skilled labor in this industry is constantly rising. As long as there is construction, there will always be a demand for skilled labor.

Noticeably, opportunities in the field of refrigeration, airconditioning and heating have dramatically increased in the past ten years. This is partly due to the effects of climate change. Most vocational training schools are now offering courses in airconditioning to meet the demand.

Skilled workers are expected to have an excellent grasp of their chosen specialty. Some jobs may require many years of training and experience. Skills in communication, general science and math are indispensable for a skilled worker. Usually, training and education require only six months to a year of technical training. A high school diploma is required to qualify for a technical training course.

Some skilled labor workers are paid higher than white collar job workers because of the risks involved, such as in the case of roofers and welders assigned on a high rise building construction. Fatality is higher in these fields than other skilled labor trades. Other specialized fields where the risk is high are dynamite or explosives technicians, miners and oil drillers. Workers in sanitation and sewerage are paid higher as well because of the risk of contracting bacteria and other harmful and noxious substances.

Some skilled labor trades require a license before you can start working. Electricians, plumbers and those engaged in specialty fields are some of the trades that require a license. Depending on the requirements of the state where you want to practice your field, a skills and aptitude test is usually given. The worker has to pass these tests before he can obtain a license.
