When young people are asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” some of them may answer, “I want to be a designer!” However, what kind of a designer do they really want to be? There are different kinds of designers, meaning there are also different kinds of design jobs that they may decide to go after once they have graduated from college.

Of course, those headed off to college often already know what aspect of design they want to get into but even then, the number of positions open to them after graduation may surprise them. While they share commonalities, they definitely share differences that group them into variety of categories. A student who studies interior design is different from on who studies graphic design but both fall under the general subject of design.

So, what kinds of design jobs are out there for aspiring designers?

1. Interior Designer – An interior designer is the individual tasked to design and decorate the space of their client and the space can either be residential or commercial. If the structure is being made from the ground up, the interior designer works closely with the architect and engineer, but they can also work on spaces that are already in existence without being involved during the building process and can even come in for renovations.

2. Graphic Designer – A graphic designer is the individual tasked to design whether through original creation or through the use of readily available materials graphics that are used for various media such as print publications (i.e. magazines, newspapers, brochures) and electronic media (i.e. television, the internet, multimedia). A graphic designer often needs to be able to showcase their skills through traditional means (i.e. pencil and paper) and digital means (i.e. computer or tablet).

3. Fashion Designer – A fashion designer is the individual tasked to design clothing for a specific client or a particular clientele. The fashion designer can design an entire collection of clothing to be made for mass production then sold in a store but can also be requested to design a custom-made outfit for an individual or group of individuals, such as a bride or the entire wedding party.

The world of design can offer a myriad of opportunities for those budding designers out there that have a sense of originality and creativity. With all the design jobs available, the world is their canvas.
