It is just apt to say that radio is one of the oldest sources of entertainment and fast information. In today’s age of film, television and the Internet, the radio still remains as the general public’s number one favorite. It is one of the cheapest and most portable sources of instant entertainment and information.
If you are interested to work in radio, you must get rid of the preconceived notion that it is all about “the voice you never see”. A radio station is bustling with activities and being in the thick of it offers you the rare experience to reach out and affect the lives of millions. There are a lot of people with varied talents that go to work behind the making of a radio show. A career in radio will open a lot of favorable opportunity for you.
Perhaps the most popular entity in a musical radio program is the announcer, more popularly known today as disc jockeys or deejays. They are responsible for selecting and playing the favorite music of their listeners. The deejay’s counterpart in a radio talk show is the talk show host.
Since radio programs are presented to the public as live broadcast, you will want to consider that the work requires a good speaking voice and fast thinking. Radio hosts should also be able to make themselves understood easily and clearly. Most important is to be able to empathize with your listeners’ moods and emotions. On top of that, you should be aware of the general trends and current events to create an attention-grabbing talk show.
If you are more of the behind-the-scene type, then you may want to consider applying for a position with the production staff which is composed of two departments. The content department staff is responsible for the audio side of radio production. They handle programs like musicals and talk shows.
The Engineering department installs, maintains and repairs all the equipment in the studio and ensure that the right radio frequencies are transmitted. You have to be a certified graduate in communication engineering to be able to join this team.
If you are into sales, you can be a part of the sales and promotion staff in a radio station. This team is in charge of selling air time and advertising to clients which is in fact the life blood of the radio station.
It must be stated here that a radio career is not that financially rewarding. Should you still want to pursue this line of work, your reward lies in the hearts of countless adoring listeners who long to see the person behind the voice.
